Editorial Review for Rub's Smokehouse LLC – by Alex Leviton
In Short
Two ex-telecommers with a passion for barbeque decided to reward the Triangle by quitting their day jobs. At night they dry rub each type of meat with a different blend and slow-cook it over hickory, five hours for chicken and ribs, overnight for pork or fall-off-the-bone brisket. This meat speaks for itself, but customers are welcome to add homemade barbeque sauce at the table. If you're new, ask your generous waiter for a sample.

I asked a couple locals in the airport where I needed to go given this limited amount of time. One pointed me to a white table cloth place and the other to an "old shack down a small road on a gravel strip".....it's didn't take me long to know I wasn't going to go anywhere with a table cloth. The old shack really isn't that old and the road wasn't all that small and the parking was gravel....but it was a rental car so I didn't care. :-) \ The staff was pleasant and the owner (?) was quite fun to talk to. I didn't catch his name, but based on our conversation I'm assuming he was one of the ex-telecomers mentioned. He suggested the sampler platter which had brisket, pulled pork, ribs, chicken wing, greens, and hush puppies. My assessment of each is: - Brisket. Good rub and smoke flavor. A little too dry, but I was in early into lunch so they may have prepared for a lunch rush. I was the first customer of the day. I would get it again without questions. - Pulled Pork. OUTSTANDING! Great flavor and juicy. The sauce at the table was a perfect companion. I really wish I could get a few pounds shipped back to Texas. - Ribs. Good rub and flavor. A bit fatty, but very meaty. - Chicken Wings. The smoked chicken wings were very good. Very juicy and flavorful. I almost went back for a dozen wings and some pork to go, but I didn't know if my hotel would have a fridge in the room. - The greens and puppies were along the lines of most other southern restaurants. They were good and I'd get them again, but I wouldn't go back just for the greens......and there are places I would do that for. All in all, I was very pleaseed with Rub's Smokehouse. If I'm back this way again, I will definitely stop back by for a conversation and barbecue. The only issue I have is that they only have lunch house so I won't be able to stop in before my flight out tomorrow night.
Pros: Pulled Pork.
Cons: Hours limited to lunch time.

Rubs had some ownership issues and is now called Smokey's. It is still the same great food though. The meat is very lean and the sauce is unique. It's a bit of a mix of tomato and vinegar. Make sure if you are there on a nice day to take your food outside and eat on the picnic tables. Great food and great service.
