Editorial Review for Amra's – by Laura Rudolph

In Short
Located a block from Raleigh's Historic Depot District, this jazz club is reminiscent of an old-time speakeasy--where one would expect Al Capone to walk in at any time. Its 22-foot-high ceiling, leather chairs and dark fabric wall panels complement a baby grand and small tables accessorized by lamps. Live entertainment, cigars, cocktails, wines and beer draw a brisk after-work professional crowd. Weekends bring a mix of young and old jazz lovers.

Where has this place been? My wife and I have been searching for somewhere to relax and have a stress-free evening out. This is it!! After being told of Amra's by a neighbor, we decided to risk giving it a shot on a Saturday...quite impressed is the best way to describe our experience. Not only does this place allow cigar-smoking, they ENCOURAGE it--and my wife who hates it was not even bothered because they have huge smoke eaters so you can barely notice the smell. Translation--I got to smoke a stoagie to my heart's content minus upsetting the missus or anyone around me. SCORE! The service too was way above average--the bartenders actually seemed happy to be there...she took the time to help my wife try several wines before picking one and talked to us for a while before giving us written directions to our next destination. I loved the feel of the place. The only thing I would change is I wish they had food!! We would have stayed there all night could we have eaten dinner!! Nevertheless, a great experience and we will be back many times.

Pros: Ambience, Service

Cons: No dinner!

Went Saturday night...30s and up crowd...a few cheesy older guys, but lots of MILFs looking for action. They mix strong drinks...a strong Makers & water just like I like. Guys looking for action from older women...this is your place.
