Editorial Review for Duke University Chapel – by Citysearch Editors

In Short
As one of the most recognizable buildings at Duke University, the chapel remains a beloved part of campus. Each year, a variety of musical performances amaze audiences--particularly Handel's Messiah--but the chapel also holds regular worship services on Sunday mornings. Check out all four of the chapel's organs--especially the Flentrop, which is visible upon entrance. Known as Bach's organ, it pumps out intense harmonies that reverberate throughout.

Insider Tips

Where to Sit

Of the 1,470 spots, the best bet is a middle pew, so the Flentrop doesn't sound to loud.

Know Before You Go

Those with direct Duke affiliation, you can have their wedding in the chapel. Services include same-sex unions.

When to Go

Hear a variety of organ "virtuosos" through the Organ Recital Series. The productions occur Sundays at 5pm and are free and open to the public.

Who said that you can't find religion at the end of Science Drive? Attended my first service there today and took the tour afterwards. It really is an architectural marvel. It ranks only behind the Biltmore in terms of places visited in the state of North Carolina. Really recommend the tour as it really fleshes out a lot of the details in the chapel that you wouldn't otherwise think about.

Pros: Stain glass windows, intricate attention to detail, architecture, parking

Cons: Organ can drown out the choir

Spending time in Duke Chapel, whether or not a service or performance is going on, is a feast for the eyes and the soul. It's awe-inspiring, no matter what your religion, I think. The architecture, organ, and stained glass windows are breath-taking! Spend some time there, it'll be a highlight of your visit to Durham!
